J. Bruce Ashton

Composer

Bruce Ashton holds degrees in piano performance from Capital University (Columbus, Ohio), American Conservatory of Music (Chicago), and the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. His studies at all three academic levels included composition, with such teachers as Stella Roberts and Scott Huston.

For 30+ years Dr. Ashton has taught piano, music theory, and music history at the collegiate level. He gets involved with chamber music at every opportunity, either as pianist or violist, and is particularly fond of accompanying. He also continues to present solo recitals, and has performed a number of concerti with orchestra.

Most of his compositions and/or arrangements are done for a particular situation, often involving a slightly unusual mix of instruments. One special challenge has been a series of two-dozen settings for viola and clarinet, unaccompanied. Generally he is able to work quickly, and in spite of a full teaching schedule, is delighted to take on commissions for specific settings of existing pieces or new works, either instrumental or choral/vocal.

Dr. Ashton lives in Collegedale, Tennessee (near Chattanooga), with his wife, Leila, a professional portrait artist and music teacher. His three children are all married, and each is an avid string player, making family reunions a great opportunity for recreational ensemble evenings.

A selction of Dr. Ashton's material can be found in the Maestronet Chamber Music section.
